An ulcer is a lesion or sore in the stomach or intestinal wall. Gastric ulcers occur in the stomach. The most common type is duodenal ulcer, which occurs in the upper section of the small intestine known as the duodenum. Both are classified as peptic ulcer disease, or acid disorders (any of several conditions involving secretion of acid in the stomach or intestines).
