Research/Academic Support

Helping to enable the education of new family physicians and facilitating health research are two cornerstones of Nycomed’s involvement in research and academia.

Medical School Scholarship Program

To encourage more medical students to choose family medicine as their area of practice, and to help address the doctor shortage we are experiencing in Canada, Nycomed proudly supports the education of five undergraduate medical students in Ontario each year.

Developed in consultation with the Ontario College of Family Physicians, this scholarship is open to medical students who are enrolled at a medical school in Ontario and who choose to specialize in family medicine. If you are interested in applying for the Nycomed Medical School Scholarship Program, please inquire at your Ontario medical school.

Université de Montréal

Nycomed supports a Respirology Resident Research program through Université de Montréal teaching hospitals. Nycomed has provided the program with an unrestricted research grant for its training program.

Toronto Western Hospital, Asthma and Airway Centre

Nycomed’s donation supported the establishment of the Nycomed Graduate Student Award for students enrolled at the University of Toronto, within the Division of Respirology.

University of Manitoba: Enhancing Inuit Respiratory Health

A first-of-its-kind, four-year pilot research project funded through a $300,000 unconditional research grant from Nycomed will examine why more Inuit are dying of lung disease than Canadians in the rest of the country. Researchers from the University’s J.A. Hildes Northern Medical Unit will work with the Inuit community of Sanikiluaq to determine prevalence, explore linkages between cultural activities and respiratory disease, and ultimately introduce a model of community-based care to help diagnose and manage respiratory disease.

Laval University Respiratory Group

Through a financial donation, Nycomed helps scientists at Laval University http://www.ful.ulaval.ca/ research new ways to diagnose, treat and prevent respiratory ailments, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
